Finally, a good Batman game -- that doesn't star the kid the WB is trying to pass as Batman. Fans of the old BAtman cartoons will love this game because of all the special features Ubi Soft has included for them. If you're a diehard fan, you can expect a lot of cool stuff. Most of the game is ripped directly from the cartoon, and often times make you feel like your right in it. For anyone who thought of wandering Gotham at night and being Batman for a day, you can't go wrong with this game.
The controls handle nicely, and the learning curve is gradual. Within minutes you'll be a better Batman than Batman himself was. There's actual 3D movement here, no Resident Evil or Tomb Raider-like "grid" movements. You can jump, glide, punch, block and duck at ease, and you can tell that the developers were Batman fans at heart.
Being Batman isn't easy but all of the moves integrate seamlessly with the game.First person mode, fight mode, and vehicle mode all have their own control schemes but theyare easy to get used to. The camera isn't perfect and sometimes makes the control seem less responsive than they are, but it's a small annoyance in an otherwise perfect control setup.
If you've watched Batman cartoons before, not the "Justice League" or "Batman Beyond," the actual Batman Animated series, you know what to expect. The graphics are awesome and make you feel like your playing an episode, their that good. The darkness of the game may be over exessive, but does a great job of illustrating Gotham's gloomy city and runs at a fast frame rate while doing it. The famed Rayman team made this, just so you understand how good the graphics are. There's plenty of awesome cinematics, which unlike some games, are actually pleasant to watch.
The background music does a great job of keeping the flow of the game and actually it improve it. Since the voice acting comes straight from the cartoon, you expect them to be great and well, they are. The sound effects round off the awesome audio. After listening to this game, it's hard to back to the default techno sound of others. You can change the special effects, the music, and the game voices to your preference through the menu.
Batman fans will no doubt love this game. It's everything you'd want out of it. Ubi Soft chose how to develop it's license nicely, and the end result is a game that everyone would want to play. -- Jose Liz, PGNx Media ---- Oct 23, 2002
