Super Bust A Move 2 (PS2)

Sometimes the simplest things make up some of the best games in history. Bust-A-Move was one of Taito's greatest gems, no pun intended, and you can tell by the sheer amount in which it is availible.

Some may wonder in puzzlement as you show excitement clearing your gems and passing them on your opponent and not understand what makes this such a great game. This version delivers more of the classical action with better, more high-resolution graphics, thousands of new boards, and new characters join the cast all with new animation.

New secret moves bring the game up to speed and are often quite unique. You can play and show off your skills --- or lack of them --- in Classic, Normal, Edit, Training, Battle Mode or take on a friend in two player mode. Edit mode is new and lets you create your own puzzles. Afterwards you can save them to a memory card and take it to a friend's house.

Before you read any further, don't go into this game expecting cinema-quality graphics or sound or surprisingly deep gameplay. This shouldn't really surprise you since puzzle games don't really offer that.

The graphics, both the gems and the characters are very colorful; maybe too much. Your character is wonderfully animated, showing signs of happiness and sadness whether you win or lose. The backgrounds are detailed and animated in the same quality, but become nearly noticable in the lightning-quick gameplay. The background music or effect neither add nor take away from the gameplay. The goal is to have something that's not too loud and mostly soothing as you play and this game has just that.

A puzzle game is either made or destroyed by their controls and these controls handle with precision. The outcome of the games aren't based on poor controls here, they are based on poor player skills. For the most part the game is simple and doesn't require the controls to be so precise, but other times you'll be thankful Taito went through the process of making the controls like they are, wonderful.

Sure there are other games with a little more flash and excitement, but Super Bust A Move 2 continues the legacy of the series with the one of the best puzzlers ever made.
