The pinnacle to the trilogy and one of the greatest games ever invented finally hit home to turn the tide of the war. Super Metroid was released in 1994, which was the year Nintendo pulled away from SEGA, which had suffered the worst year ever with three failed systems. This game had it all. A great story, explosive action, and devious puzzles and bosses, what more could you ask for?
The story takes place right after Metroid II. Samus takes the metroid to a research station at Ceres but it is suddenly and violently attacked by Ridley, who made his debut in the original. He takes the metroid and flees to Zebes, but Samus is hot on his heels. Thus, we begin one of the biggest and baddest adventures ever to take place on Nintendo soil.
The graphics are nothing short of jaw-dropping, with perfect lighting effects and very evocative atmospheres. The controls couldn't be better. All of the moves work well with the controller and picking this game up has never been easier. The music is also superb, as each area has its own music, and all of them perfectly blend in with the atmospheres, creating a one-two punch. The overall gameplay is absolutely brilliant, and there is no question that this game is one of the best when it comes to side-scrollers.
All in all, Gumpei Yokoi made one of the finest games ever to hit the SNES. It went on to win nine awards including Game of the Year, along with sound, gameplay, and control. This game is what legends are made of. -- Chris Vavra, PGNx Media ---- May 12, 2002
