Hypnotix’s crazy golf game returns, this time with a Mature rating. The first Outlaw Golf game was a pretty solid golf game but its major draw was unquestionably the zany antics of the crazy golfers complete with an out there composition meter. Though Simon and Schuster Interactive, the developer’s previous publisher, closed downs, Take-Two’s Global Star has picked up the game, allowed Hypnotix to increase the zaniness of the characters’ antics and best of all sell it all for $20.
Hypnotix didn’t skimp out on the gameplay modes as Outlaw Golf 2 includes a great many different varieties. The game includes Exhibition Mode (where you’re able to try out some of the game’s crazier modes like Baseball Golf, Casino, and Pick Up Sticks) and a Quick game mode. Additionally, you’ll find the career mode (where you take a character and allow them to build up their skills while unlocking additional courses, and characters, among other things). Lastly, Outlaw Range is a collection of golf-related minigames.
Outlaw Golf 2 also features full Xbox Live support for those who wish to enjoy themselves with other, like-minded people.
Outlaw Golf 2 includes a crazy lineup of characters, much like the first game. You’ll find the sexy Summer and her caddy Autumn, Clem who is the stereotypical redneck and others that you will never find in Tiger Woods. The game includes a total of eight courses, although fans of the first game will remember three of them (most memorable being The Turnpike, a throwback to New Jersey’s highway system).
The game’s actual golf gameplay isn’t all that exciting. Instead of the button-based gameplay of the first Outlaw Golf, you’ll find the swing-based system Tiger Woods PGA Tour made famous. The swinging system isn’t very complicated but you’re able to change the shot type and the club you’ll use. The original’s main draw was the Composure Meter which allowed you to beat your caddy to regain some composure after a bad shot. You see, many poor shots will drain the meter and cause your skills to drop quite a bit. As always, you’re given tokens along the matches which you can then use to beat your caddy to gain composure or take part in the cart-racing minigame.
Outlaw Golf 2 is a pretty looking golf game. The courses are varied enough and include appropriate detail and rather thorough textures. The character models are, of course, excellently done complete with superb animation for both the golf mechanics and the composure-related minigames.
The game’s audio fares pretty well. The rock music won’t please all fans but thankfully custom soundtrack support is included. Otherwise, the sounds of golf are all accurately portrayed. The voice acting for the characters is pretty good and does flesh out their unique personality, while commentary is provided by Comedy Central comedian Dave Attell who provides often humorous thoughts on the game.
Outlaw Golf 2’s golf gameplay isn’t stellar but the game more than makes up for this by the sheer variety of modes available, the unique and ultimately loveable (if a bit scary) character lineup, Xbox Live support and of course, the $20 price tag. -- Adam Nunez, PGNx Media ---- Oct 27, 2004
