Solid WWI action for a mere $20. Global Star and Silver Wish Games have teamed up to create a fun World War I combat game and more impressively they’re shipping it for $20.
Wings of War’s primary gameplay mode it the Campaign mode. Here you’ll play through the game’s numerous levels each with tasks to get through. These tasks range from straight up races or escort missions to much more action-filled events like dogfighting, one-on-one battles and dropping bombs. In addition, the levels include a good bit of supplementary missions should you want to complete them. In some tasks, you’ll be the gunner in the plane as opposed to the pilot and these provide a refreshing change of pace.
As you fly through the levels, you can take time out to destroy the surroundings and find power-ups since most tasks are not timed. This allows the game to extend its length and do so without annoying the player. Flying through the levels is made more fun due to the fact that Wings of War is a very arcade-like title. The planes don’t control all that realistically but are fun to fly, which is much more important.
There are many planes (over twenty) including some you can unlock. These planes feature a unique look and are rated in several categories, but it never burdens the arcade-style gameplay.
Although the Xbox version doesn’t have the multiplayer mode of its PC counterpart, you’ll find a quick play mode that allows you to set up a deathmatch in a few seconds. You can be twenty planes at one time (including yourself) which creates rather hectic action.
Visually, Wings of War does its job. The planes include much detail such as indepdently modeled cockpits and overall different looks for each of them, which can be customized in the game. The physics are arcadey but work. You’ll notice the plans breaking in the order you would expect them to. The environments are pretty and the draw distance is extremely impressive.
The audio in the game is equally fitting. The soundtrack has the important feeling popular with flight combat games and the sound effects certainly live up to their part. The voice acting for the missions briefing is nicely done, although the in-game lines are a bit too repetitive.
Wings of War is a solid combat title for Xbox owners who want a more arcade like experience. Unfortunately, Silver Wish Games didn’t take the game online. Nonetheless, for $20, you’re getting many hours of enjoyment out of it.
