Duke's back! On an all-new game for everyone's favourite handheld! With an all-new plot, and the same alien blasting we're familiar with, is this game worthy of making us "Hail to the King"?
You obviously star as Duke Nukem, and the world -- you guessed it -- is being threatened by aliens. Duke starts the alien extermination at Area 51 in the first step of saving the world from total destruction, being kept updated by General Graves, as you blast your way through Egypt, Australia, an alien ship, and other environments.
You have an arsenal of weapons similar to the arsenal of weapons in Duke Nukem 3D. You have a pistol, shotgun, machine gun, rocket launcher, and other weapons assist you to dispose of alien scum. If you played Duke Nukem 3D, you'll be familiar with a lot of enemies you engage with. The basic kind of alien adversary, pig cops, Octobrains, and machine-gun-wielding aliens are a few types, along with new enemies, such as the hybrid gray alien, which has the power to resurrect the dead. There are also original bosses in the game, such as one resembling a giant spider, with a rocket launcher on it's back
The graphics mirror those of Duke Nukem 3D's, but with a little less quality. The graphics aren't as good as those of Ecks vs. Sever, but aren't bad either.
The sound was the biggest disappointment. There weren't as many of Duke's one-liners (Which were ripped from DN3D), which really made the game lack the humor that DN3D had. Also, the sounds that the guns made was tinny, and the enemies' grunts before they die were less enthusiastic and not as good as they were in DN3D.
Controls were squeezed in, as, as we all know, there aren't many buttons on the GBA. It was frustrating to have to hold the Select button as you circled through your inventory, especially when your health was low, or during a boss battle. Other than that, the controls were OK. But the frustration from changing weapons loses points.
This wasn't such a big disappointment. But it could have been much better, especially with an original story, new enemies, and some modified weapons. Rent this one before making the decision to purchase it
