Quality gaming for $9.99.
When you receive a brand new game from a brand new company that only costs $9.99 you start to think that something is not right. Well, it turns out that Global Star is a division of the mighty Take-Two Interactive empire (alongside Rockstar Games and the newly re-launched Gathering). The company is Take-Two’s budget publisher but if Corvette is any indication, budget doesn’t mean bad.
You start with a classic Corvette and compete in races around the country as you learn a bit about the history of the Corvette brand. Along the way, you’ll be able to unlock more cars (over 50 Corvette models) and upgrades for your cars. The upgrading isn’t very deep at all: pretty much just the basics but something is better than nothing. Corvette fans, though, will surely get a kick of watching some vintage Corvette models.
There are a number of modes in the game but its all pretty standard racing game modes. You’ll have the typical arcade mode, quick race (which allows you to start racing well, quickly with a decent amount of items to start off with), career and multiplayer. The career mode allows you to complete different parts of Route 66. The multiplayer is standard split-screen.
Corvette doesn’t give many troubles when it comes to controls. There are notable differences between the different models and you can also tell when you upgrade something, which is always good. On the flip side, the game keeps things competitive by using the infamous “catch-up” AI trick, so you’ll never actually smoke the rest.
The game’s visuals are basic without any doubt. Although they are basic they look pretty good. The cars are rendered accurately enough and the various tracks provide enough variety. The framerate keeps up with the game, which is also a plus.
Aurally, Corvette doesn’t do much. You aren’t going to hear anyone talking or anything but the engine sounds are pretty decent.
If you’re looking for a new racing game on your PS2 and only have $10, give Corvette a try, it won’t disappoint you. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with it, and you will surely get what you pay for. Of course, if you’re a Corvette fan you’ll want the game for novelty purposes. -- Jose Liz, PGNx Media ---- Apr 30, 2004
