Secret Weapons Over Normady (PS2)

LucasArts keeps the original games coming.

Adam: So, how exactly are we doing this?

Jose: Well, you played the game didn’t you?

Adam: Sure did.

Jose: Alright, well just state something about it and we’ll go from there. I’ll start.

Jose:Secret Weapons Over Normandy is a LucasArts game which seems to follow the company’s branching out more into non-Star Wars-themed games.

In a nutshell, Totally Games has done a great job making a game like this on the PS2, not only because of the technological limitations but also because of the control issue. SWON has a rewarding control system which works very well with the PS2 controller.

The game begins with simple training missions so you get used to the control system of the game. Once you do so, you’ll be able to play in various battles including actual historical battles with a multitude of dog fights. Totally Games did a great job at keeping some of the realism found in other similar titles while making the game accessible without forcing gamers to read through a Bible-sized manual.

SWON has plenty of historical information to keep history buffs satisfied but the actual story isn’t that satisfying. It makes SWON seem more like an action game than it would be classified as otherwise.

Adam: We played the PS2 version of the game and the visuals are quite attractive. The various models have quite a bit of detail that show through the different camera angles. The levels are decent also, better than those found in similar games although not quite achieving the visual masterpiece that is Crimson Skies for Xbox. The framerate keeps up with the action very well, and hey there are even some codes to get Star Wars planes in here.

On the audio side, everything is as expected. The much hyped score by Michael Giacchino of Call of Duty fame comes through very well. The sound effects are solid, as is the voice acting.

Jose: If you wanted a PS2 game where you can dogfight all you want and be able to pick up and play, Secreat Weapons Over Normandy is it. A very solid effort by both LucasArts and Totally Games.
