Quite a list of games for mere $20. Here you’ll find over twenty games, making each less than a dollar to own. These games include SpyHunter, Defender II, Gauntlet , Paperboy, Rampage and RoadBlasters. The full list of games also adds Joust, Marble Madness, Robotron: 2084, Smash TV, Joust 2, Rampart, Blaster, Sinistar, Super Sprint, 720°, Toobin’, KLAX, SPLAT! , Satan’s Hollow , Vindicators, Bubbles, RoadBlasters.
One of the biggest issues with compilations is how they perform. Midway Arcade Treasures performs rather well on the Xbox controller. Although there are some exceptions since you know, the Xbox controller is universal while some of these games required specific controllers. Nonetheless, given that only one controller could be used, you’ll ignore some of the problems. Most won’t even notice them, unless they played the game before when they were released.
The games are held together in an Egyptian menu looking thing. The quality is quite bad but I guess it does its job. The games themselves let you tinker with the amount of credits you can use, so that means you can progress regardless of your skill level. If you’re good though, you can upload your high score to Xbox Live, for bragging rights of course.
You don’t really expect fantastic visuals from a compilation but Midway’s offering has some weird issues. The games seem a bit too blurry and some of the colors seem strange. I’m not sure if that’s the game itself or the compilation since I didn’t play any of these games when they were released.
The presentation isn’t enhanced by the highly compressed FMV interviews, either. There are only a few too which is a shame.
Could Midway have done a better job with the game? Certainly. But at a mere $20, you’re getting quite a bargain if you’re into old school games. -- Jose Liz, PGNx Media
