Best $10 game of all time? Probably. Gotham Games has released Ford Racing 2 for a mere $9.99 on PS2 (Xbox owners have to pay $19.95). While not an insanely great game, for $10, there isn’t much more fun to be had.
There isn’t a shortage of racing games on the current consoles. Whether you own a PS2, Xbox or Gamecube, there is a pretty diverse amount of racing games to pick from. But not many of them are released for a mere $10. Before I played the game, I was pretty sure it was going to be bad. I mean, what other decent PS2 game costs $10?
The game’s bulk is done through the Ford Challenge. In this mode you will complete various challenges. As you progress, you’ll get some new challenges. Each of these challenges lets you unlock more modes, tracks and cars. There is a respectable amount of stuff to discover, although it won’t take you too long to get everything the game has to offer. Once you collect everything you want to collect, you can take these new things to have a quick race against the AI or another friend. The multiplayer in the game is pretty enjoyable.
The actual gameplay is solid. The physics are respectable without being too annoying. The cars handle relatively realistically, too.
The game’s visuals do a very nice job. The car models are awesome; Razorworks did an excellent job modeling them. The environments and tracks range from being spectacular to poor. There are some where the textures are awesome and the tracks are varied. Others feel very rushed with muddy textures and no sense of diversity.
In the audio department, there are a number of decent sound effects as you progress. The tracks are varied enough to fit diverse styles of different likes.
Should you get Ford Racing 2 instead of Gran Turismo 3? No, probably not. If you have already played through your racing games and want something else or just have $10 to spare, give this a try. I’d say rent it but you’re better off just purchasing the game. -- Jose Liz, PGNx Media ---- Nov 16, 2003
