Celebrity Deathmatch (PS2)

From stellar game to budget title.

Celebrity Deathmatch was supposed to be one of Gotham Game’s biggest games of the holiday season. Now, it’s a $20 budget title. Nonetheless, the premise is the same. This is an interactive version of the popular MTV series that pitted clay celebrities against each other.

The game’s roster is probably its best friend. There are plenty of stars in the game like the infamous Tommy Lee, rapper Busta Rhymes, E! star Anna Nicole Smith, the awesome Ms. Cleo, adult entertainment star Ron Jeremy, multi-colored Dennis Rodman, the sexy Carmen Electra and Cindy Margolis. Other notables include everyone’s favorite boy band, N*Sync. Other characters include Frankenstein, the WereWolf, and the Mummy.

You take all these characters in many available moves. If you watched the show, you know that the battles took place in many odd locations. Many of those are included in the game. You can fight in a single match, nicknamed Deathmatch. Episode serves as the game’s story mode with six episodes, each with three matches. If you get tired of the game’s cast of characters, you can make your own.

The fighting system isn’t very confusing either. There is a grapple, block and three attacks. This won’t be much fun though so you can collect many power-ups which will allow you to use your signature move. Each character has their own special move which relates to their persona. The characters also have another signature move, called the Death move, which can be used when your opponent is about to die.

The visuals stay true to the show it’s based on. The crude clay characters are remarkably similar to that of the show. All of the noteworthy features of certain characters are larger-than-life, but that’s something that we’d expect from a Celebrity Deathmatch game. The animations are very smooth, as well.

The show’s theme song makes up much of the audio portion. The fighters have a taunt at the beginning and end of the match and they are pretty funny, if you get the show’s humor. The announcers Johnny Gomez and Nick Diamond do a decent job but repeat way too often.

Celebrity Deathmatch is a difficult game to judge. It’s not a very good wrestling game nor is it an excellent fighting game. But it is functional and fans of the series will love it. Best of all, it is only $20.
