Have your basic secret agent off to save the world from a deadly bio-weapon that could end the world as we know it... Syphon Filter came after MGS and GE, which is a tough act to follow. Instead of going in the same direction as MGS and GE, 989 and Eidetic took a unique approach to the spy game and added a lot of unique features to the genre that have been used and implemented over time, and it is easy to see why.
Gabe Logan is the main character, and his job, along with his partner Lian Xing, is to stop a terrorist named Rhoemer who has an ambition to destroy the world with a deadly virus known as Syphon Filter. The pair work for a group called the Agency that has shadowy motives throughout the entire game. Gabe and Lian go from D.C. to Kazakhstan in an attempt to stop the madman and anyone else that gets in their way, no matter what the cost. The story is very sharply written and the characters are very three-dimensional. The only one that is not is the villain, and we can accept that.
The graphics are a little blocky, but they will not hurt your gaming experience in any way. The FMV shots are very realistic and very cool. The controls take a little getting used to, but you can fix it to your own liking. The sound is very true to the pace of the game and the voice-overs are very solid. The overall gameplay is excellent and you will not regret playing this genuine game. This comes around once every so often, and we should be glad we got it.
Overall, Syphon Filter is a genuine and outstanding game for the Playstation. Everything clicks together minus some bad pop-up and a weak final boss battle. This game got 14 nominations and it won two.
