Freestyle MetalX (PS2)

Midway Sports Asylum breaks some havoc. The game is a taste of motocross madness and includes tons of mayhem, arcade-like, big-air action.

At first sight, you can tell that Freestyle MetalX isn’t your ordinary game. Its overall theme and look stands out as soon as you look at its case. I mean what other box cover has a dude in a motorcycle, coming out of another dude-in-a-motorcycle’s mouth who is really coming out of another dude-in-a-motorcycle’s mouth who is really coming out of yet another dude-in-a-motorcycle’s mouth. Yup, that’s pretty insane.

You start off with a few characters but as you progress you’ll be able to get some sixteen characters each with their own unique look and control. The case of characters is um, unique, to say the least. You’ll take these characters out in several bikes, with even more to unlock.

There are eight massive levels for you to show you skills in. These levels are massive and in career mode, you can unlock areas that bridge them together, making a huge playing field. Most of the time, you’ll be asked to perform tricks and stunts in a certain time limit to gain money and popularity. Along the way, you’ll find power-ups to increase your health or speed or to get a point boost. As you progress through the game, you’ll get better bikes which mean you’ll be able to better tricks, which means more money and more bikes. Once you get tired of the included levels, you can enter the game’s expansive create-a-level mode.

Controlling your bike is pretty easy, Midway did a good job at keeping things simple and responsive. Pulling off tricks doesn’t take too much effort and you link insane combos if you time your stuff right.

You can’t really complain about the visuals too much. The bikes are rendered pretty accurately and behave as one would expect them too. The characters are all pretty unique and as far as pulling off tricks goes, they have plenty of animations. The environments are expansive and the eight different areas look distinct enough. The fall animations really stand out, though. You get to see a lot of blood and the rag-doll physics are a sight to look at.

If you dig rock music, you’ll love Freestyle MetalX’s soundtrack. It is made up of bands like Motorhead and Megadeth, so if you’re a fan, you won’t be disappointed. Unfortunately, it doesn’t offer much of an alternative for other players. The sound effects are pretty standard but do display the on-screen action well enough.

Freestyle MetalX does well on its promises. It delivers a fast, arcade-style experience in your console. The visuals are nice, the sound is alright, the controls are tight and well, it’s a very easy game to get into.
