Mario went into the 16-bit dimension and he made all of his fans smile once again for the second straight year... Super Mario World is either the favorite of the old Mario games or the least favorite. Rarely there is anything in between. Even if the game is your least favorite, though, the game is at the top of the ranks, which is extraordianry. The game redefined everything we thought we knew about the Mario games and put in a little variety and a new character, Yoshi, who is now one of the most beloved Nintendo characters ever.
The story is fairly simple. Mario, Luigi, and Toadstool go to Dinosaur Land after the events of Mario 3. Toadstool disappears during the vacation, and Mario and Luigi decide to rescue her from Bowser when all the clues point to him. Now, with the help of their fruit-eating friend, Yoshi, the chase is on. What they also learn is Bowser's kid koopas reside in the major continents of this world, making things only tougher for them.
The graphics were really good, but they weren't the best ever, just really, really, good. The controls were really simple and very easy to execute, and hit detection was no problem either. The music is a little different, but it hits the right tone at all times. The gameplay, of course is where it shines the brightest and it is clearly evident right here. The game has 96 levels and it is up to you to find them all. Many levels have two exits, adding to the depth.
Overall, Miyamoto made a masterpiece and it clearly showed when it came to the awards. Ten awards, including Game of the Year, showed that Mario was the people's choice for all time.
