So, Battle Network wasn’t really your thing, Zero was way too freaking hard, and you’re still craving for a good Mega Man game. Well, Mega Man & Bass, a port of the never released in the U.S. Super Famicom game, Rockman & Forte, may be the answer.
In Mega Man & Bass, the evil android known as King is calling all the powerful robot warriors of the world to join his army and help him wipe out every single human from the surface of the earth, thus forming a world populated only by mechanical beings. Many androids accept King’s offer and set off to complete their task–kill every single human. Mega Man, as the hero he is, decides to stop King. But he’s not alone: Bass, the robot who claims to be the mightiest of his race and despises the blue bomber, is also after King for his own reasons.
I played the original Rockman & Forte a long time ago and I haven’t noticed any changes so far. The graphics remain the same–they’re outstanding (for a SNES game, anyway). Mega Man and Bass look better than they did in Mega Man 7 (sorta like in Mega Man 8), the bosses are a little bit more detailed, and the backgrounds still have a futuristic air. Even though the game looks a little bit too cute for something supposed to be futuristic, it’s just too good to bad-mouth.
As for the sound department, it’s definitely something you would hear in a Mega Man game–you know, the li’l sound you hear when Mega Man dies and stuff. Not anything new or impressive.
Controlling Mega and Bass can be a problem. They both have different moves–Mega Man can charge his cannon while Bass can fire multiple shots, for example. It’s not hard at all to master each character’s moves. However, the problem I mentioned is sliding and dashing. It’s kinda hard to perform them at first, but you eventually get the hang of it–if you’re good enough with the D-pad.
Mega Man & Bass can be frustrating, not as much as Mega Man Zero, but it’ll still tick you off at times. However, chances are you’ll still come back for more since there are a hundred CDs with information on characters from Mega Man titles to collect throughout the game (believe me, it’s addictive if you’re into Mega Man). Overall, Mega Man & Bass is the best appearance by the blue bomber on the GBA so far. Now how about some Mega Man X?
