SSX Tricky (Xbox)

SSX Tricky is another snowboarding title on the XBOX (also available on the GameCube). The game is quite unrealistic, and that appeals to a huge crowd, but not me. SSX Tricky is another snowboarding title on the XBOX (also available on the GameCube). The game is quite unrealistic, and that appeals to a huge crowd, but not me. When you get your Adrenaline Meter up to its fullest, the Tricky disc starts rotating. While it is doing so, you can pull off insane tricks, which are impossible in real life. All of those sick tricks, known as ÜBER Tricks, require you to take your feet out of the bindings and do some weird trick with the board, most of which look like skateboarding-like tricks.

You start out with 3 playable characters, each with one board and outfit. There are two modes that include single event, and world tour events. In single event, you can do all the same challenges as in world tour, but it won’t advance your character. The main mode is obviously the World Tour, which is sort of like a career mode. You start out with only one mountain to race on. The challenges on World Tour include Race, and Show-off. In Race, you race against other boarders, trying to place in the top 3. In Show-off, you have to get a certain amount of points to get a medal. In race, there are 3 parts, quarterfinals, semi-finals, and the finals. You have to place in the top 3 to advance. After you beat all the challenges on a mountain, another mountain is unlocked.

You also have a thing called a Trick-Book. It has 6 chapters with 5 tricks in each. You have to complete each trick before advancing to the next chapter. If I remember correctly, you get a new board when you beat a chapter…but I am not sure…. you get some sort of reward.

For beating certain challenges in World Tour mode, you get experience points which you can add to any area that could help you win (i.e. Speed, Tricks, etc.)

The sound in the game is not too great, but it is all right. The character voicing is done by Hollywood actors, but the actual dialog is a bit cheesy. The sound effects are a bit unrealistic, but better than I anticipated. I was not impressed by the sound at all, and I just played a CD in my stereo instead.

The graphics are nothing out of this world, and nothing to brag about either. Amped has much better graphics than SSX Tricky. Although the backgrounds are pretty cool, the snow patterns repeat themselves constantly, there are only about 4 models for the trees (the ones that you can grind on), and there’s only one trail that you can see, and that is your own. The character detail in the actual game is not too good, and some are a bit distorted. The Crowd looks horrible. There are only two models, and they are 2D. I definitely think that with the XBOX’s power, the graphics should have been much better than they are.

The controls are not hard to get used to, but I wish they were a bit more like in Amped. I am too used to using the triggers for tweaks/balancing instead of for grabs. The controls are much different from those in Amped, but I got used to them quite quickly.

The character models are not exactly “cool”. The only good-looking character is Elise. She’s pretty hot for a game character, but nothing compared to the DOA3 chicks :D. All the other characters are a bit weird…big afros, fat, and ugly. The characters should have been more developed.

Overall, this game is pretty cool and fun, but I prefer the graphics, characters, and realism of Amped.
