Some may agree with that, but I do not. AirForce Delta Storm is an air-combat simulator. It has good graphics and lots of planes, but the game itself is not fun, nor is it addictive, nor is it interesting.
As I said, AirForce Delta Storm has good graphics. The land is quite detailed from above, the planes look realistic, and the trail the missile leaves looks great. One part where the developers slacked off is probably the crashes. If you are a suicidal-gaming-maniac like me, and like to kill yourself in many creative ways, this game will not deliver. The programmers got lazy, and completely took out the part where you crash your plane. There’s no explosion, no one flies out of the plane…nothing happens. The screen just turns black and you restart the mission (or lose your plane, and go to the main menu). Other than that, the graphics are great. You can see the flaps move on the wings and tail when you turn, or go up/down.
The game’s sound, is probably the worst out of all the XBOX games I’ve played. The planes barely make any noise, the missiles only have the “detachment” noise, and the explosions, you barely ever hear. To try to cover that up Konami put in some in-game music, and trust me, it doesn’t make the game any better. The music that they put into the game is really bad, and it’s the same tune playing over and over again.
To add to the disappointment in sound, the menus are really annoying. When you pause during a game, there’s no options menu…there’s nothing. You can’t quit a mission…the only way to end it, is to die, or complete the objectives. Since there’s no options menu in the game, you have to end the mission, go all the way back to the main menu, and then alter some options if needed. I’m sure that I am not the only one that this has pissed off. You change a setting after playing once, go back to play another mission, then you realise that the new setting don’t satisfy you, and you have to go through the same process all over again. This is probably the worst thing about the game.
As if all of the above is not enough, the gameplay, the most important part of the game, is so bad, it’s not even funny. The plane is extremely hard to manoeuvre, and the only controls you have are up, down, left, and right. Although I have seen this in some movies, I couldn’t possibly roll the plane, go forward at an angle, or any cool things that a plane should be able to do…especially a fighter jet! There isn’t much of weapons selection…machine gun, and missiles…what joy! I am one of those people who likes a good storyline, and AirForce Delta Storm disappointed me there as well. The missions are all the same – destroy a plane, a ship, or a cannon. The story is this: there’s a war, fight it. Not enough to satisfy me.
The game is not fun at all, and I got bored after playing it for 10 minutes. The only thing that kept me going was getting enough money to buy a new plane. This game is probably really long, if you have to get all 70 planes, and beat every mission, but since I don’t like the game in general, that is no plus to me.
AirForce Delta Storm looked really good from some screens and movies, and previews and reviews, but I guess, it’s one of those games that can look good, but be really bad…I just hope this will not be the case with Unreal Championship. If you like flight-simulators, this may be the game for you, and my recommendation is rent it first. When I first bought my XBOX, I though I’d get this game, but after playing it for 40 minutes, I realise that I made a good choice by not getting it then, and renting it first. -- Anonym.
