Quantum of Solace (DS)

Quantum of Solace on the DS, developed by Vicarious Visions, takes a different approach to the game than the console versions do.
The game uses the DS’s “book mode” where you turn the handheld on its side. On the left-hand screen, you’ll find your objectives, statistics, ammo, life bar, and a map of your surroundings. On the right-hand touchscreen, you’ll see the main game in action.

Quantum of Solace’s gameplay is largely executed through the touchscreen, since there is only one physical button. Combat in the game is done by drawing lines and circles in the touchscreen, which results in punches and grabs. Similarly, you’ll have to hold the stylus to the edges of the screen to block. Similarly, you’ll “drag” Bond to move him, sneak around by tapping his feet, and automatically jump by dragging Bond over certain barriers. You shoot enemies by tapping them and can scavenge them for items by using the touchscreen, as well.

You can also equip playing cards (and hold up to five at a time) to upgrade Bond’s stats on the fly. If you can collect pairs, straights or full hour hands you can boost his statistics even more. There are also poker chips from enemies that can be traded in for Bond Points, which allow you to upgrade stats including health and weapon accuracy.

Visually, Quantum of Solace looks great thanks to a competent 3D engine and a pretty good animation system. Vicarious Visions went all out and nailed the Bond feel for the game’s menus (including the second screen), which surprisingly enough does a lot for the overall experience.

The game’s audio is terrific, especially for the DS. The soundtrack is appropriately epic and sounds like it could have powered the blockbuster movie, thanks in large part to the famous Bond theme song. The sound effects—particularly explosions—all sound great, too. There’s a surprising amount of voice acting for a DS title including some lines recorded specifically for this version. Activision got the film’s cast including Craig, Eva Green, and Olga Kurylenko to provide voice acting for the game, and they all do a great job.

Overall, Quantum of Solace is sure to please fans of the movie, series, or those looking for a solid action game on the Nintendo DS. The game has a surprisingly deep character upgrading system and a great presentation for a DS game.
