Buzz! The Hollywood Quiz (PS2)

Sony follows up on the Mega Quiz with another fun party game, with plenty of movie trivia tossed in for good measure. Buzz! The Mega Quiz surprised many gamers with its solid mixture of questions, as well as the game’s overflowing personality. The characters all had their own little twist and the comments from Buzz and his hostess were funny. There are a few new characters here, as well as a new set piece (you’re playing in Hollywood this time) but for the most part the game will feel familiar.

The Hollywood Quiz’s main trivia mode includes eight rounds. New for this version are Hollywood Stars (similar to the first round of the previous game where you pick a subject and answer questions, except these are all Hollywood subjects), Top Rank (arrange movies in a certain order), and Fact or Fiction (where you’re given statements and have to decide whether or not they’re true). Old favorites from The Mega Quiz, such as Fastest Finger (shown a picture slowly filling in, the first person to answer wins the points), Point Stealer (fastest person to answer gets to steal points), Pie Fight (fastest person to answer gets to throw pies at their opponent), and Final Countdown. In the last one, player’s points are turned into a time bar, which slowly (then more rapidly) decreases the longer you wait to answer. The player with time left wins.

As with The Mega Quiz, Buzz! The Hollywood Quiz is best played with a group of friends. The game supports all of its modes for up to four players, and most for up to eight players. If you have eight players, the final round becomes Pie Fight, instead of Final Countdown, which is a little disappointing given how intense and fun Final Countdown is.

Visually, the game shares the same technology as the Mega Quiz, which is to say it looks okay but not stellar, even for a PS2 title. However, Relentless Software has improved the art style for this game so everything looks livelier even if the actual graphics engine is the same. The sound is quite good though, thanks to all of the film snippets, Buzz’s dialogue and the random (user-selectable) buzzer sounds.

The Hollywood Quiz is available in two packages: one that includes four wired Buzz! Controllers for $40 and one that just includes the game for $30. The Buzz! Controllers are very simple to use, since they consist of just one big buzzer, and four colored buttons that you’ll use to play the game.

Buzz! The Hollywood Quiz is another fine trivia game and a great addition to the Buzz! franchise. If you’re a movie buff or like movie trivia, you’ll love the game. At the same time that presents a bit of a caveat: this game really is focused on movie trivia. If that isn’t your cup of tea, you may be better off getting The Mega Quiz instead.
