Medal of Honor Heroes 2 (Wii)

Make use of that fancy new Wii Zapper.

Medal of Honor Heroes 2 is a run-and-gun at heart. The game’s eight missions are very linear and force you down a particular path where you’re bound to see a lot of enemies that you have to kill before moving on to the next narrow corridor or strip of the game. The game includes a standard campaign for those using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, which offers a bit (but not much) more freedom in where you’re able to go. If you snap on the Wii Zapper, the game switches to an on-rails arcade shooter where you’re truly just mowing down enemies. The game’s primary objectives simply focus on laying waste to a number of enemies but there are some secondary objectives like securing documents or destroying enemy vehicles to be found.

Although the singleplayer portion is fun, Heroes 2’s claim to fame is undoubtedly the 32 player multiplayer available for the Wii. There were a few games close to that limit and they ran just fine, showing that it is indeed possible to have that many people play online using the Wii. That said, the online offerings aren’t fully fleshed out since there are only six maps and you’ll find single and team deathmatch modes, as well as capture the flag.

Visually, Medal of Honor Heroes 2 pushes the Wii’s graphics. The game looks about as good as Call of Duty 3 for the Wii and Xbox, with sharper textures and more happening on the screen. The character models all look good for a Wii game and the animation system is solid. The environments are quite large and varied and all look quite good.

The game’s sound is also fine. The background music fits in with the game and it’s about what you would expect from the Medal of Honor series. The sound effects, notably the gun fire, come across the fine. The voice acting isn’t stellar but it gets the job done, although there are some sound bites that repeat a bit too much.

Medal of Honor Heroes 2 isn’t going to win awards for being groundbreaking or innovating. But if you’re a Wii owner looking forward to running down some Germans using your new Wii Zapper or just want a good, old-fashioned run-and-gun shooter, then this is your game.
