The Buzz! Series makes a stateside appearance. Like Sony’s SingStar series, Buzz! is quite popular overseas but never really caught on here. This is likely to change with Buzz! The Mega Quiz, a light-hearted fun trivia game that’s aimed more at younger adults than the family friendly fare of say, Smarty Pants.
Buzz! The Mega Quiz includes over 5,000 questions in categories ranging from music, sports, movies, TV, animals, celebrities, etc. The game even keeps track of the questions it asks you to avoid repeats. Not all of the questions are simple trivia questions though. Sometimes you’ll have to recognize a famous person or determine if that famous person is older or younger than someone else, or even put events in order. The includes four “buzzers” that include a large red button that you’ll need to hit to “buzz” into the question, as well as four colored buttons that represent different choices. All four buzzers are connected to the same USB cable that you then plug into either the PS2 or PS3.
Before you get started, you’ll need to choose length (short, normal, long) and a difficulty (there are three available). Then, you’ll have to choose your character from a selecting including a cheerleader, wrestling, cowboy, opera singer, etc. Then you’ll have to choose what sound your buzzer makes from a selection of car alarm, scream, horn, etc. However, you’ll only need to engage in this process once since your alias will be remembered for future sessions. Alternatively, you can play with random characters using the quick play option.
Buzz! is hosted by the wise-cracking British Buzz and his sidekick, Rose. The game introduces the match and the rules for the various rounds. The rounds are quite varied. You’ll find point picker (standard trivia stuff, choose a category then answer questions), fastest finger (more points for answering more quickly), pie fight (where contestants can team up against the person in the lead), globetrotter (where a plane is flying all over the world and the first person with the right answer gets to pick its destination), point stealer (can steal points by answering questions correctly), and final countdown (where you get a certain amount of time to get as many questions right; you gain more time by being right and first and lose time by answering incorrectly). All in all, the various rounds are quite varied and the final round is intense. Once the game is over, Buzz! shows you a breakdown with a number of statistics such as how’s fastest (and slowest), as well as who was the most (and least) accurate.
Buzz! The Mega Quiz is definitely worth the $40. The game is a perfect complement to SingStar and the Guitar Hero games, and makes the PS2 quite a party machine. Bonus points that it works with the PS3.
Note: The game was tested on the 60GB PS3 with full backwards compatibility. It may not work on the 80GB unit with partial compatibility and will not work on the 40GB unit without any compatibility. -- Adam Nunez, PGNx Media ---- Nov 26, 2007
