The PSP’s puzzle game library grows just a bit. Luxor: The Wrath of Set is a PSP port of the PC game Luxor, which will be most familiar to Xbox Live Arcade’s Zuma. The underlying gameplay is certainly fine-tuned but Luxor fails to excite and invigorate the puzzle genre like some other puzzles games on the PSP.
In the game, you launch balls with a jewel of sorts that moves across the bottom of the screen. The game tasks you with linking three (or more) balls of the same color although you can gain multipliers by linking up various sets at the same time. Additionally, the game has some power-ups which do things like speeding up your shots. Once you’ve blasted enough balls in one stage, the game lets you move on to the next one. Luxor includes over 120 levels and 50 maps for you to play through, although most of the maps don’t deviate too far from their typical formula. The later stages do throw balls at you faster thereby increasing the difficulty.
In terms of presentation, Luxor gets the job done but won’t impress you. The game has a clean diminutive look with plenty of bright colors but there isn’t really anything catching your eye. Other PSP puzzle games have demonstrated that puzzle games aren’t inherently boring to look at so it’s a bit disappointing that more wasn’t done with Luxor’s graphical style. The same pretty much applies to the sound—it’s okay but nothing extraordinary.
Luxor: The Wrath of Set is being released for slightly less than a typical game (it retails for $30). You can’t go wrong with Luxor if this type of game is your cup of tea but there are better alternatives available on the PSP. -- Jake Wilson, PGNx Media ---- Jan 19, 2007
