Activision Hits Remixed
Relive the classic Atari 2600 days with Activision Hits Remixed. With every game company dropping classic collections on consoles and PSP, it was only a matter of time since Activision ported its classic hits collection on the PSP. The end result is a game that emulates the classics very well and is perfect for short spurts of gaming.
Activision Hits Remixed has an intuitive menu system. The game’s main menu shows you the different Atari 2600 games on the left, a television screen showing the currently selected game in action, and the menu options on the right. You can choose “Play,” which plays the currently selected game, toggle through the games by hitting “Select Game,” browse unlockables in “Media” and play multiplayer in “Game Sharing.”
The game includes 40 of the company’s Atari 2600 games. The game lineup includes Pitfall, Pitfall II, Tennis, Stampede, Spider Fighter, Boxing, Checkers, Dacathlon, Dolphin, Ice Hockey, Kaboom, River Raid (and its sequel), and Space Shuttle, among many others. The games themselves are faithful recreations of the original Atari 2600 games. It’s interesting to play games from a time when game titles were one or two words. They’re not particularly complex and lend themselves quite well for 10-15 minute gameplay sessions. Although the games were obviously designed for the Atari 2600 joypad they lend themselves well to the PSP button layout.
The game makes use of the PSP’s wireless technology to incorporate local wireless multiplayer for some of the games. The multiplayer mode works extremely well and lets you fully enjoy the games. Don’t worry if you can’t convince a buddy to pick up the game, via the Game Sharing feature, you can simply beam him the game and play multiplayer with one copy of the game.
Graphically, the games look just like they did all those years ago. You’re going to be seeing a lot of simple sprite-based characters and areas with very straightforward animation. The emulated games are true to the original games and the PSP doesn’t have any trouble emulating them. The game soundtrack is very 80s and somewhat cheesy (but that’s okay). The included songs range from “I Ran,” “The Safety Dance,” and “Tainted Love” to “Harden My Heart.” The sound effects include the tiny sounds from the original games.
Activision Hits Remixed gives you 40 classic games, a serviceable menu design, and perfect emulation for the games. If you’re interested in the lineup, be sure to pick up this collection. -- Jake Wilson, PGNx Media ---- Nov 11, 2006
