Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron (PSP)

Snoopy’s latest adventure is quite fun. Peanuts fans know that Snoopy is quite the versatile character. He definitely shows this in his latest game, Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron.

Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron primarily focuses on the campaign mode. The game retells the story of Snoopy taking on the Red Baron. Snoopy is joined by plenty members of the Peanuts gang including Sally, Lucy, and Linus. Charlie Brown doesn’t join the cast since he was taken as a prisoner of war, which is why Snoopy has to go on this adventure in the first place.

The gameplay spans six story worlds. During these missions you’ll have to defend your bases from enemies but you’ll also need to defeat enemies when you take the offensive. The game actually includes 10 weapons although they all have a silly flair like water bool launchers and pumpkin seed shotguns. Since Snoopy cannot randomly fly into the air you’ll be controlling a fully armed bi-plane. You can even upgrade the plane throughout the course of the game. Snoopy is further aided by Woodstock, his wingman, which helps you take on the enemies.

The game’s missions give you primary and secondary objectives. They’re actually pretty linear, though, so it’s possible to get a good chunk of them on your first play-through. You’re rated on how well you do so you may be given the ranking of a General or Colonel, which increases the game’s replay value.

The game includes three multiplayer modes, although they’re all based on deathmatch mode. The gameplay modes include a standard deathmatch mode (Top Dog), a timed deathmatch mode (Flying Aces), and a survivor mode where you only get one life (King of the Skies). You can turn any of these modes into team deathmatch modes if you wish. The game includes up to four players or up to seven bots, 13 characters, and 4 levels.

The game’s graphics are pretty good. The Peanuts characters are well designed and certainly look like 3D versions of their classic 2D counterparts. The game’s environments look pretty good, too, although some of the textures are fairly standard. The game’s cutscenes capture the style of the comic very well. There are some cool technical effects like motion blur and lighting effects tossed in. The audio is also impressive. The voice acting is fairly repetitive although what is included is not too bad at all. The background music has a jazzy sound to it which fits the silly though action heavy game quite well.

Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron is one of those rare games that was certainly designed to appeal to younger games, but can capture the attention of anyone. It has solid gameplay, a good presentation and a nice ranking system that makes you want to replay levels.
