Nicktoons Battle for Volcano Island (PS2)

Nickelodeon’s Nicktoons make a holiday console appearance. While the recently released SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab focuses on America’s favorite talking sponge, Nicktoons Battle for Volcano Island includes a number of the most popular Nicktoons.

In the game, you’ll play as SpongeBob, Danny Phantom, Timmy Turner, Patrick Star, Sandy Cheeks, or Samatha Mason. The game tasks you with saving Volcano Island so you’ll need all of these characters to help you achieve this goal. The 3D action game is heavily focused on combat. You’ll use the different characters, which have special moves unique to them, to defeat the enemies you’ll find along the different levels. You’ll occasionally have to take control of some weapons to help you achieve this goal. As you play the game, you’ll find non-playable characters like Jimmy Neutron and Squidward and you’ll be able to unlock additional levels and costumes for the characters.

The gameplay in the game is fairly standard combat action. The game does allow for two player multiplayer allowing another player to join you at any time. It works pretty well although it doesn’t do a whole lot to battle game’s simplicity. As with the SpongeBob game, Nicktoons is obviously aimed at younger gamers and the gameplay is tuned for them.

The game’s graphics are similar to other THQ Nickoleon games. The game’s playable character models are pretty detailed. Spongebob, Patrick, Sandy, Timmy and the rest of the cast will be instantly familiar to fans of the cartoons. The environments include volcanoes and forests and look pretty good. The lighting is pretty good although nothing too fancy.

The game’s audio is nothing stunning but pretty good nonetheless. The game has the same background music found in the other similar games but manages to flow in well with the game. The sound effects are not bad, and the voice overs are fine although they’re somewhat too repetitive.

Nicktoons Battle for Volcano Island already has a dedicated fanbase. If you’ve enjoyed the previous Nicktoon games, Battle for Volcano Island will be another game you have to add to your library.
