Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 (PSP)

Tiger plays another tour on the PSP. The Tiger Woods videogame franchise has been going strong for many years now. It may be too strong since the biggest detriment against Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 is that it doesn’t radically reinvent the wheel. Arguably, when the gameplay is this good, it doesn’t need to.

Tiger Woods 07 features the expected modes. The game includes the typical game modes like stroke, best ball, skills 18, skins, real time event calendar, battle golf, etc. For a more in-depth mode, you can head to PGA Season Mode where you’ll create a golfer and try to make him win the FedEx Cup. The game doesn’t feature all of the game modes from the console versions since it doesn’t have the Tiger Challenge or Team Tour mode. Aside from this there are a few minigames thrown in.

Tiger Woods 07 on PSP includes 12 courses and 11 golfers, compared to 21 each on the consoles. Nonetheless several of these courses and golfers are new to the PSP including Fancourt Links and Cog Hill on the course’s side and John Daly and Luke Donald on the golfer’s side.

Tiger Woods 07’s control system isn’t quite as intuitive as expected due to the inherent lack of the accuracy with the analog nub. The game does makes things reasonable by giving you a swing indicator which tells you how hard you need to swing to get the shot you want. It makes the system much more enjoyable. The game mechanics are a little more forgiving than the console games because of the lack of accuracy which makes the game playable without making it unces

Visually, Tiger Woods is up to par. The courses still look excellent featuring plenty of details including animals moving around in the background and the player models look good. The game is a little blocky at times, but looks fairly similar to the PS2 version.

The same can be said about the game’s audio. It is still top-notch, accurately recreating the sounds of golf. The commentary from Gary McCord who provides well-meaning commentary contrasts with the comical arrogance of David Feherty. The game’s create a player tool allows you to choose one of give voices for your character. All of the voices are pretty good and add life to the character. Once again, it would be nice to hear some new sound effects or voice overs every now and then. The PSP version’s audio seems very similar to the console games.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 is a good complement to the console versions if you want to play some golf on the train. It doesn’t have all of the content, but it plays a mean game of golf.
