Battlefield 2: Armored Fury (PC)

The war finally hits America. In Armored Fury, the second booster pack for the popular Battlefield 2, the war between the United States, China and the Middle Eastern Coalition has reached US soil. The ME Coalition is trying to take over the capital while China is trying to steal our Alaskan oil. The booster, available for download from EA, includes a number of new maps to go along with this new scenario.

What’s new in Armored Fury? For starters, the game includes three new maps which take place in the good ‘ol USA. In Operation Road Rage, you’ll fight the MEC to prevent them from taking over a key highway, in Operation Harvest you’ll have to protect the Pennyslvania Dutch County, while in Midnight Sun you need to keep China away from the oil located in Alaska’s Valdez port. The maps are more open than they were before allowing you to use your vehicles more than you did in the previous games.

Aside from these maps, the game includes some new vehicles. You’ll find ground-attack aircraft and light helicopters in the game. The ground-attack aircraft are slower, letting you line up a shot better than you were previously able to do. However, because they’re slower they’re also more vulnerable to antiaircraft missiles, balancing out their benefit. The light helicopters are nimbler and more maneuverable than other helicopters. They aren’t particularly strong and can only be used to take out infantry with the canon, but you can house two passengers in it that can drop mines into the battlefield. On the flip side, because of their light weight, it doesn’t take much firepower to knock one of these out of the air. The game includes some civilian vehicles in the game, although these are more for show than anything else since they aren’t armed and you cannot have an armed soldier shot from them.

Otherwise, Armored Fury is the same Battlefield 2 you’ve come to love. The graphics engine has not been changed, although it still looks great. The new battlefields are more open than they were and the game has more colors compared to the grim desert environments of Battlefield 2. Aurally, the game is nearly identical to Battlefield 2 featuring a similar soundtrack and analogous sound effects.

Fans have been asking for American locations since Battlefield 2 was released and Armored Force finally gives them that. The new vehicles and maps complement the game perfectly. If you’re a fan, and your favorite server supports the booster pack, there is no reason not to give it a download.
