Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (Xbox)

Read the review of the amazing game for the Xbox which includes new characters unlockables and much, much, more! Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance

Gameplay
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance is basically the ported Xbox version of the Sequel, “Sons of Liberty”. In this game you are assuming the role of Solid Snake, the legendary soldier who survived a nuclear crisis and saved the world, which is sent on to a tanker to investigate what seems a new Metal Gear. Snake is first equipped with cigarettes (they are useful at some point, cough::: Infrared beams), An M9 with the backup of tranquilizer darts, scope, and many more useful tools. On this tanker you can make communication to your colleague Otacon via a codec radio. While on this tanker something strange happens to the crew and it is up to Solid Snake to once again, investigate.

Graphics
The graphics in this game are astonishing; with eye candy like falling rain effect in the beginning of the game just tells you what this game is going to be about. What really sold me on the graphics were the blood affects. After a tough gunfight there was blood smeared all over the wall like it was a massacre going on. The only thing that disappointed me was when I went outside of the tanker, and there was rain, the game was in slow motion. I don’t know what caused this but I thought that the mighty Xbox would have handled the rain effects with no problem at all. Other than that the game did not experience any other negative affects, overall it did impress me.

Controls
The controls in the game really did work well with the Xbox controller. The thing that I thought was great was that the Xbox controller has pressure sensitive buttons; I had no idea about the Xbox controller until I played this game. I had no problems with the smooth flow of the controls in the game. I love how in every single place you are in the game it provides the perfect camera angles to get the job done. Koonami did an excellent job on the controls and camera angles.

Sound
Sound was just an overall greatness. The gunshots, hearing Snake’s feet pitter-patter among the floor, and the sound of the rain falling on the tanker. Voice acting was superb and I had no disappointments with the games acting at all. Everything was perfect on sound.

Replay
The replay value on this game was through the roof. Just having over 200 VR missions was worth buying the game with nothing else. Another great factor with this replay value was all the unlockables you can get in this broad game. I thought the coolest thing you can unlock was demo of the new skateboarding game that Koonami is currently developing. The thing about this new unlockable was that you were Snake skateboarding on the tanker. The new feature in this game is the ability to play as Raiden or Snake in their many outfits throughout the entire game. This may give the hardcore Metal Gear Fan the edge s/he needs. There are new Cut scenes that weren’t in the original game, plus there are some secrets I don’t want to spoil. The fun factor in the game is an overall fabulous display of eye candy, strategy, stealth, and action. Personally I loved the VR missions and spent most of my time playing through all of the VR missions. A cool factor was once you played a percentage of a character’s total VR missions you would get a new character, with a total of 4 unlockable characters in just the VR missions. This is one of the many reasons I spent most of my time just playing these. One thing, you haven’t played through the VR missions until you have the one with the Giant soldiers. There is also Snake Tales, which are 5 missions related just to Snake. This is a great thing just to hone your skills.

Overall
Overall this game is as satisfying as playing the old METAL GEAR SOLID 2 and I know I will definitely buy this game because of it’s replay value and how everything runes smoothly
