Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex (GCN)

Another one, I see...

I enjoy the Crash games as a casual fan. When they come to me I play them with mild interest, wondering what that little guy is getting into now, but nothing more than that. I have more desire to play Metal Gear Solid or Syphon Filter than I would play this game, but they have been fun, all the way around. But, that used to be true. After Crash Bash and that stupid racing game, things have not been right. Popularity has tanked and the game play seems to have grown stale. That should have not affected the main games, but it did. This game shows it perfectly. They would have had something if they hadn't gone into being sellouts.

The story is just like the others. Cortex is on one of his ramparts, and Crash is the only one who can stop him. This is typical, like Mario's plots, but with a little more text than Mario and with a little more weight. Mad man out to rule the world, I suppose. There is no major beef with this part. The story will be instantly recognizable to previous Crash fans.

The graphics are good, but they seem like nothing more than a slight upgrade from the PS1 games. Yes, the visuals are better. I will definitely give you that. Are they mind-blowing? By no means. Has it been done before? Yes. The graphics are by no means bad though, just average.

The play control does a decent job at handling the game. The handle the game decently and the hit detection, although sometimes shady, usually do a good job. The buttons are laid out nicely, everything is there in front of you and you really don't need to complain. Playing with a Wavebird is surprisingly enjoyable.

The music does its job. It isn't so great that you want to hmm the tunes later on, but they aren't bad. Classic Crash music here and that isn't really bad. The music is respectable since this is a platform game; it is neither bad nor particularly good.

Is this game going to bring back memories of nostalgia? Yes, of course they will. It seems that Traveler’s Tales learned how to use load times, this version loads a whole lot less than the PS2 and even Xbox versions. On the plus side, some of the minigames like the hamster ball are pretty neat, and some of the levels are the same way. There are some really neat ones towards the end. I recommend this to Crash fans, lots to enjoy here. With games like Mario Sunshine, though, Crash doesn't stand out too much to casual gamers.
