Guilty Gear X AE (GBA)

The Game boy Advance has been seeing a lot of old games mixed with a bit of new flavor. Guilty Gear X AE (Advance Edition) comes off practically nowhere to impress handheld fighting fans everywhere.

With the best of old 2D fighters and more recent additions, Guilty Gear X will impress a quite a few. The game will attract you with its nicely animated high-res graphics and keep you hooked from then.

In what seems to be a sea of SNES conversions coming to the GBA, it’s nice to see a relatively new game coming. Guilty Gear X fans will find all their favorite things here, including the game’s famous artistic flavor. The graphics are very nicely done, and remind you of the recent PS1 Guilty Gear X title. The colors are a bit dark, as with most other GBA games. The sprites are all very nicely animated making the action very smooth and make the controls more responsive. The backgrounds work very well with the characters and make the overall visual package very appealing to the players. The background music and sound effects are decent, but don’t really add to the game. They resemble GBC games more than the recent GBA games in terms of music. Fighters aren’t known for their awesome music though, and keeping that in mind you won’t feel disappointed with the overall quality here.

The controls handle very responsibly. Everything you do is shown very accurately on the screen, making your playing experience a very enjoyable one. Any mistakes you make have to be blamed on your own skill and not on the game’s controls.

The game will seem pretty easy though. It is possible to start playing this, mash a few buttons and finish it without using any continues. It’s a bit of a disappointment but you’re able to change the difficulty of the game. All of the difficulty levels with the exception of “very hard” offer very little challenge to you. Playing in very hard mode however, opens up a whole different game. You’ll have much more fun that way. While that doesn’t necessary make the game a bad one, you feel a bit disappointed and ripped off. The game’s length is hurt due to its easy difficulty. Then again, GBA fighters or even GBA games as a whole aren’t known for their difficulty. Luckily, the game includes a two-player mode so you can battle your buddies. The two-player mode is fun and adds a whole other layer to the game. It makes for a very enjoyable car ride, if both you and your buddy have a copy though. You need two copies of the game to play ‘multiplayer.’

There have been a lot of 2d fighters for the GBA recently. Some admit to being 2d fighters and stay true to their formula, like Street Fighter 2 and others try to be pseudo-3d, like Tekken and Mortal Kombat. In my opinion, Guilty Gear X AE is better than those three titles I mentioned and is currently among the top fighting games made. The game’s difficulty could be improved, but overall this is a great game. If you are in need of a GBA fighter, you can’t be too wrong to pick this one up.
