New details on Gathering’s new game.
Vietcong: Purple Haze on consoles is actually a mix of the best missions from PC’s Vietcong and its Fist Alpha expansion pack. But not content to simply port the game, Gathering and the game’s co-developers - Coyote Developments and Illusion Softworks – have optimized nineteen of the original missions for the consoles. In addition two new missions (Halong Port and Storm) have been added to the game
The other missions include from Vietcong: Seize the hill part 1, Seize the hill part 2, Po Tlong Karai, Stream; They’re coming, Too many targets, The last stand, Outpost, The Bridge, False Alarm, Hunting Charlie, Ho Chi Minh Trail and Insertion. These are joined by four missions from the Fist Alpha expansion pack: Thunder Creek, Operation Pandora’s Box, Death Valley and Field Guns Battery.
Multiplayer maps include the following: Mine Factory, Stream, Storm, Po Tlong Karai, Halong Port, Waterfall, Arroyo, Burn the Jungle and Thunder Creek.
On Xbox Live, the game features many multiplayer modes. These include favorites like Deathmatch (free-for-all), Team Deathmatch (same as Deathmatch but with teams), Capture The Flag (each team has a flag to protect) and Assault Team Game (where one team is given an objective to complete and the other needs to prevent the objective from being completed). Each of these multiplayer modes can be played in any of the multiplayer maps with up to nine other players. The only exception is that Halong Port doesn’t support Capture The Flag.
In addition to the favorites, the game includes an additional mode, Real War, where each map will have 3 or more flags for your team to score and you’ll need to hold all flags on the map in order to score. This mode can be played with up to nine other gamers in the following maps: Thunder Creek, Burn the Jungle, Po Tlong Karai, Storm and Stream.
The game isn’t only adversarial action, however. You can get up to five others, form a squad and play through missions together while fighting the A.I. controlled enemy in the game’s cooperative mode. Cooperative gameplay is available on the following maps: Po Tlong Karai, Storm, and Stream.
The developers have made playing online rather easy, as well. By simply selecting Quickmatch, you’ll join the first available Xbox Live session. If you want more control, you can select Optimatch which allows you to choose the Map, Game Type, Max / Min players, Skill Level and whether Friendly Fire is on or off. Of course, you can always create your own match. Vietcong: Purple Haze also support Xbox Live’s “Friends” list to allow you to play against your buddies with ease.
If you don’t want to go online, you can always play in a QuickFight. Here, you can choose a map (must be unlocked from single player), side you wish to fight for, and how many people will accompany you. You can also choose how many enemies you will find and whether those enemies are from the USA or Vietcong. Lastly, you’ll need to choose your weapons.
Vietcong: Purple Haze will be released on both the Xbox and PlayStation 2 on September 15, 2004. We’ll have a review of the game soon after that. -- Jose Liz, PGNx Media ---- Sep 3, 2004
