Reports are claiming this. Sony's next PlayStation will use the speedy XDR DRAM developed by Elpida, Toshiba, and Samsung. The three manufacturers expect to have the technology ready by 2006, which is when we expect Sony will launch its next console.
There has been a change of plan in the XDR DRAM technology, though. Previously, each chip would hold 64MB. This has now been lowered to each chip holding 32MB. Sony is apparently looking at housing four of these chips in its next console, for a total of 128MB of RAM. For comparison, the current PS2 only has 32MB (while the Xbox houses 64MB). Microsoft's next Box is rumored to have a whopping 256MB of RAM. If all this pans out, developers will once again have to contend with porting their games to Sony's console with only half the available memory.
XDR DRAM is expected to be very quick though, so some developers may be able to push its speed to make up for its limited capacity.
We'll have more on any next-generation console news soon. Source: 1Up.com
